A habit with purpose, and a purpose with sparkle.
The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence began in 1979 in San Francisco, when a handful of queer rebels donned nun habits on Easter Sunday and hit the streets with a mission: to provoke, to heal, to stand for the oppressed, and to turn the gaze of the world onto the beauty and strength of queer lives.
What started as sacred satire became a global movement of activism, performance, and community care. The Melbourne Order — our cheeky, fabulous, and fiercely loving chapter — continues this legacy with a unique Aussie twist.
In our city, we’ve been known to:
Host our monthly Nuncheons (think tea, talk, and tiaras)
Appear at Pride marches, Trans Day of Remembrance, and IDAHOBIT
Bless queer weddings and chosen family ceremonies
Offer support, sanctuary, and sequins to those who need it most
We are drag nuns, but we are also activists, mentors, celebrants, and community builders. Every Sister takes on a personal calling — to serve with authenticity, to speak truth with humour, and to spread joy wherever the world most needs it.
To expiate stigmatic guilt and promulgate universal joy. Translation?
We’re here to rid the world of shame and replace it with fierce, fabulous love.
